Nice comparison, and good work. I too am an ubuntu 7.10
user, and have a relatively high performance computer
with two identical 350 sata drives (one windows, for a legacy program or two, and one ubuntu, which is my primary
operating system). I have not taken the time to do the
careful analysis of performance you have done here, but my anecdotal experience is entirely consistent with your results. Gimp is a probably a poor application to use as a
comparison (for the reasons you have noted), but my
experience with photoshop vs. gimp is nevertheless
consistent with the performance differences you observed.

Personally, I strongly encourage everyone to work within
a linux/open source environment, and find that ubuntu
is the best distro for migrating users, even those with
more than adequate system resources for a windows
installation.
